Prominent Ear Correction
Heading 3
Prominent ear correction surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a well-established cosmetic procedure aimed at reshaping and repositioning protruding or misshapen ears. This surgery is often sought by individuals, both adults and children, who feel self-conscious about the appearance of their ears. The goal of otoplasty is to create a more natural ear shape while bringing the ears closer to the head, thereby improving facial symmetry and boosting self-esteem.
The surgery has evolved significantly since it was first introduced, with modern techniques offering more predictable outcomes and reduced recovery times. Otoplasty is typically performed on a day case basis under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient's age and preference. The procedure generally takes about two hours.
During the surgery, an incision is made behind the ear, within the natural fold where the ear meets the head, to minimize visible scarring. The cartilage is then reshaped to create the desired contour. This is secured in its new position with internal stitches.
Post-operative care is crucial for optimal healing and includes wearing a protective headband at night for six weeks to maintain the new ear position and prevent accidental injury. Patients may experience mild discomfort and swelling, which typically subsides within a week. It is advisable to avoid activities that could bend or put pressure on the ears during the recovery period.
As with any surgery, otoplasty carries potential risks, including infection, bleeding, asymmetry, or the need for revision surgery. However, these complications are relatively rare, and most patients achieve their desired results with minimal issues.
Despite the risks, otoplasty has a high satisfaction rate, with many patients reporting a significant improvement in their confidence and overall appearance. It is important to have realistic expectations and to discuss any concerns with me during the consultation to ensure that the procedure aligns with your goals.
